Welcome to my home on the internet

I live in New York City and I play, write, arrange, and produce music for myself and lots of other people. I spend quite a bit of time in Austin, Texas, and travel around the country with various groups. I've contributed performances, compositions, and arrangements to recordings by bands like Snarky Puppy, Okkervil River, Bill Laurance, Nelo, and many more. My band is Progger.

Progress record coming up!

Today concludes a week of minimal sleep, and frankly I'm happy and grateful to be alive. (Seriously grateful-- those deer outside of Lampasas on highway 183 almost took me out at 2am last Saturday.) The freelancing continues this month, and you could potentially hear me with a bunch of different people from now until the end of the year, but I'm particularly excited about what's been happening with my A-squad, Progress. We went into Yellow Dog Studios in Austin last week and, over the course of two action-packed days (juggling other gigs and rehearsals), we tracked a full-blown record. I originally only intended for us to record an EP, maybe 30 minutes tops, but we ended up with a full 45 or 50 minutes worth of music. Everything went well beyond expectation, and I can't wait to unleash it upon the earth.

Here's how it went down.

We set up in two rooms. The main room contained the drums with Daniel at the helm. Standing near him were Nick on bass, and Carter and Matt on guitars; the bass went direct (through preamps), and the guitar amps were isolated in other rooms. Paul and I were in the larger isolation booth, which got quickly cramped because of these:

Virtually all of the tracking was done live. There were a couple of fixes of little things, here and there, but very minimal; you'll be able to hear the kind of sloppy raw live-ness of it, which is exactly what we wanted. Occasionally, you'll hear moments where keyboards and saxophone are going at the same time, and yes, that involves a little overdubbing. I did both at the same time as often as possible, but I'm only human. Overall, we got a good representation of how we sound right now, which is all we can ask for, and we're genuinely excited about the result. It should be done within the next month or so!

Things are winding down for Nelo's year, a bit, but there will be lots of exciting things happening next year, including the release of a record we're all very proud of. Keep a lookout for it, the band has come so very far since I joined in 2009 and I'm incredibly proud of all the guys involved. My bros.

Speaking of bros, I won't be with them, but if you're in Europe this month look for Snarky Puppy! They'll be in the UK, France, Holland, and other ridiculously cool places between now and Dec. 6. Tickets are quickly selling out for all their performances, so if you're across the pond, jump on it quick. Meanwhile, here's where I'll be for the foreseeable future:
