Welcome to my home on the internet

I live in New York City and I play, write, arrange, and produce music for myself and lots of other people. I spend quite a bit of time in Austin, Texas, and travel around the country with various groups. I've contributed performances, compositions, and arrangements to recordings by bands like Snarky Puppy, Okkervil River, Bill Laurance, Nelo, and many more. My band is Progger.

An inspiring June, playing with my heroes

This month I'll be playing shows with some of my favorite musicians in Austin. In addition to some really exciting things with Progress, I'll be involved in a couple shows in a more straight-ahead jazz context. The caliber of musicians on these jazz performances is going to be enough to keep me on my toes all month, and will likely provide enough inspiration to last me a long time.

Progress has a new video on Youtube, and it's also on our webpage. It's the third and final video with footage of the recording process of our album, Beatmaker, and it shows us recording "Meltdown," the last track on the album. ...The one with dueling guitars and the face-melting soli. The video looks pretty cool, and Gary Feist did a great job as always.

The video is just in time for our June series at One2One, during which we'll be sharing our Thursdays with the amazing Hard Proof Afrobeat. I've been hoping to do a show with Hard Proof for quite a while. They sound fantastic, they groove deeply and thoroughly in the kind of sub-Saharan way that I go crazy for, and they've been picking up quite a bit of buzz on the scene here in Austin, including features on KUT and blurbs in the Chronicle. On Thursdays in June, Progress will be playing from 9:30-11:00pm, with Hard Proof following at 11:30. We'll be recording the sets, so yell pretty.

The last of those Thursdays will also be the third installment of "Progress Presents..." in which we invite some really good singers onstage to sing songs by our heroes. In the past we've featured music from D'Angelo and Michael Jackson, but I'm gonna make you guess a little longer before telling you what we're doing this month. Rest assured, it'll be cool. It won't be Chris Brown.

On June 18 I'll be leading an acoustic jazz date at the Elephant Room, my first "quintet" date in a long time, and it'll feature a very exciting band that will include the great Andre Hayward on trombone and Caleb McCampbell (of the Funky Knuckles) on piano. We might have an extra-special drummer with us as well, but I don't want to give anything else away just yet.

Also, on June 14, I'll be playing a jazz house concert at the abode of the legendary Darren Appelt. The date will be led by Steve Bidwell (of Hard Proof) and will feature one of my favorite jazz guitarists on earth, Bruce Saunders. We'll be doing music by some of our favorite composers in jazz, and some of them are quite unusual for Austin, so please come check it out if you get a chance!
